For many years the crew of Monty Python have enjoyed what I
consider the most interesting event of the year.
This is Auckland Anniversary Day regatta. We begin the long
weekend by leisurely sailing to Mahurangi harbour on either Friday or Saturday.
On arrival communications are made so that all H28 gather together and planning
is arranged around the traditional BBQ on shore. This planning often includes an
excursion up the river to Warkworth, depending on tides.
For many members this is a new destination and for those unsure
of navigating in the meandering mangroves, you can either follow the leader, or
be part of the “on board flotilla”. It is very rewarding for me to hear the
comments after this trip.
The whole long weekend is flexible and some may just choose to
wander over to Kawau Island and then return to meet up on the start line for the
main race from Mahurangi to Orakei wharf.
Last year there were 20 H28s in the harbour, and the year before
26 H28s. Unfortunately in the past, the starters don’t always finish. For some
it is the long return to their home mooring. This is a shame, as there are great
prizes, and we are in danger of loosing our own privileged class race.
Your association together with David Hilliar – “Compass Rose”,
who is a committee member of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta would like to
encourage as many members as possible to commit for this event by completing the
Keelboat & Multihull entry form and posting it off with $20 before 19
