H. Riddoch Cup Race Two Results Sunday March 16th

First:        Shalom

Second:    Quido

Third:        Winsome

Fourth:      Basil Brush

Fifth:        Pelegian

Sixth:        Confusion

A record number of six H28’s for this season entered the race, which was a run to Mapua with the front boat turning at 3.05pm and giving the others the time difference from when they turned to when they passed on the way back. The next boat then has to continue sailing for that time towards Mapua and then may turn. We have held races this way for some time now, as we do not have a buoy to go around and it seems to work.

It was good to see Confusion up and running again, having been out of action for quite sometime, having a brand new motor fitted, the mast being pulled forward a whoping 8 inches (yes I did type that right 8") so that it is now in the right position and being re-rigged.

The daywas lovely and sunny with about a 10-15 knot sea breeze and a flat sea.

With the exception of Winsome, Basil Bmsh and Confusion who all raced solo, all the other boats carried a crew of one ortwo with Shalom havefive on board.

The race started at 2.OOpm with the start/ finish line being between Pile 8 and the Port Nelson Wharf. First over the line was Confusion closely followed by the rest, with Basil Brush starting a good 300 metres back from the start line.

Once we all managed to navigate around the Kawatiri Dredge that was working in the Cut, it was all go towards Mapua.

It is great to see Basil Brush and Shalom being used again, both having spent most of the last several years, tied up in the Marina. Basil Brush, whose owner/ skipper has only been sailing a few months, re-gained his 300 metre handicap from the start and roared past most of us on the outward leg - wow can that boat go!!!!

Some of the more adventurous sailors, hoisted their spinnakers on the way home, with Quido displaying a beautiful wine-glassed spinnaker for a few minutes.

Bamfield Hodkinson Cup Results Race 1

Three H28's entered the race - Winsome, Aramis II and Quido on a rather squally and wet day. Unfortunately the first race of the season co-incided with the Tasman Bay Cruising Club Opening day.

The race results are as follows:-

First - Quido

Second - Winsome

Third - Aramis II

Bamfield Hodkinson Cup Results Race 2

The afternoon started off with very light breezes, but by the time that start-time 2.00pm came around the South Westerly had blown up to around 20-25 knots.

Three boats entered the race - Winsome, Aramis II and Quido.

Winsome was the first to pull out, having put up sails for lighters and deciding that in the rough conditions it was too dangerous not to mention slow to change sails. Quido and Aramis II started the race, with Aramis II pulling out due to the conditions.

Results:-

Quido = First

Armis II = DNF

Winsome = DNF

Due to the unseasonal weather conditions, we are getting a much smaller turnout that in previous seasons, but hopefully when the Summer sea breezes arrive, more boats will come out and enter.

Bamfield Hodgkinson Race 3

Quido 1

 Winsome 2

Shalom 3

Pelegian 4

It was nice to see Shalom out on the water, having been tied up at her berth unused for the last five years. New owner Dave Bradshaw purchased Shalom recently after tragically losing Mr Chips. It will be interesting to see if Dave and his crew can do as well in Shalom as he did in Mr Chips.

Trophy Race

Quido 1st

Pelegian 2nd

Winsome DNF

First prize for the Trophy race was $100.00 plus the honour of polishing the trophy for a year and second prize was a Hamper Winsome recorded a DNF after the crew finding water on the carpet down below decided to retire back to the marina and investigate the cause of the water which turned out to be a corroded bend in the exhaust system.
