hello fellow h28 owners

My name is kurt I am new to this forum I recently bought a h28 compass in Australia "great boat"
the other day I noticed there is a soft spot in the floor between the sink and the stove. there are no cracks it just feels soft when I step on that area.
has any other compass owners noticed this on there boats?
does anyone know or have any drawings of the floor and what supports it?
any input would be great

Hi Kurt. There is a wide variety of "finishing" arrangements in Compass H28's as many were originally bought as hull & deck units with an interior kit for the new owners to finish off the interior as they saw fit.
In the floor area that you indicate, my H28 has that zone (between stove and sink) finished as teak timber at a level approx 30mm above the lower-level plywood floor in the main saloon zone which is carpeted. Both these zones have some accessible storage under them. The teak floor between sink & stove is very solid with no movement (small access hatch for cans of beer etc) ... whilst the plywood floor in the saloon zone has large removable panels so is not so rigid. There are cross-beams in both areas of the floor of my H28.

So what's under the carpet of your H28 ... any removable panels? Or is it fibre-glassed across this area? Also do you know whether your H28 has lead ballast or iron-punchings ballast.

hi thanks for the reply
my floor is completely glassed over with no inspection ports , I plan to buy a bore scope camera and dill a few small holes about 10mm and send the camera in and see what I find.
is there any danger drilling through floor?
I plan to drill close to the centerline of boat to avoid drilling through hull.
I`m not Shure what sort of ballast I have I'm hoping lead.
the boat recently passed a survey with no problems and is very solid
so I think all is good . but I would like to confirm weather ballast is lead or Irion
thanks
kurt

You're not going to drill through the hull. I don't have a photo to hand but Sealeg has no step in the sole, the builder having glassed in a very substantial watertank above the ballast. The complete sole is boarded over flush.
The tank doesn't extend all the way back so around the galley area there is a sump of sorts probably about 8" deep then it drops away below the engine to a 'tool eating' bilge! Should you drop anything in there its a nightmare to recover.
Hope this helps.
Sealeg.

thanks sealeg ill post what I find when I get round to buying a inspection camera. I am also very keen to find out what ballast I have.
I have already had a run in with the tool and bolt eating bilge I bought a big magnet and tied it to some string and went fishing through the bilge to recover my ratchet spanner
works well

thanks kurt
