Hi there,

we are trying to find the best way to mount a Raymarine ST2000 base point. I measured 210mm height difference between the upside of the tiller and the stern deck point where according to instructions the base should go. Raymarine's pedestals only go up to 89mm. We could combine pedestal and under tiller bracket, but we are reluctant to have a bracket mounted permanently to the tiller. Which leaves mounting a podium of sorts onto the stern deck, or machining a custom pedestal. We are looking for something that can be removed, though, as we quite like to sit on the stern deck. Has anyone encountered and overcome a similar problem (photos)?

Cheers
Kara

Hi Kara,

My H28 has an Autohelm pedestal on the starboard side of the stern deck. It extends up about 75 mm. On the underside of the tiller is a steel bracket that lowers the connection point for the Autohelm about 75 mm. This bracket on the tiller is not a problem for us ... and nor is the pedestal on the stern deck.

I have attached a couple of photos that show the tiller bracket. I don't have any showing the pedestal position.

Cheers,
Bob

Hi Kara
I also have a raymarine autohelm which is mounted in a similar way to Sandbourne although mine is mounted directly into aft deck with a similar bracket on the tiller.
The tiller loads are quite high on an h28 in a big sea so you want a strong pedestal and tiller bracket.

Hi Kara

I have an under tiller bracket permanently mounted on my tiller for the self steering system. It does hit the stern deck at the end of the tiller swing but I pushed a bit of water hose over the metal and this stops abrasion of the paintwork. It causes no other problems and I only notice it being there when I use the power steering.

Regards
Robin

Thanks everyone! I conclude that I need to overcome my aversion of brackets, as using one seems the most sensible way forward.
