Herreshoff H28
Association of Victoria
The Herreshoff H28
Association of Victoria continues to
grow with over 50 members. The members
are located all over the continent, from
Brisbane to Perth. About half the yachts
on the list are Walker
H28s. They realise there are many
more Australian H28s out there and hope
that the Association will serve as a
focus for Australian H28 owners. The
Association has been formally
incorporated which, under local law,
limits the liability of the committee
and members in voluntary associations).
They have a web
page and are attached to the Hobsons
Bay Yacht Club (6 H28s on the register)
and noted that the North American H28
Association has acknowledged our help in
preparing their website.
Andrew's yacht,
HARBINGER, is a Walker H28, built in
1978. She has the standard fitout of
fibreglass interior mouldings, with teak
trim, and the standard ketch rig (some
had custom timber fitouts, a few were
sloop rigged, with no mizzen and a few
are cutter rigged ketches, with a self
tacking staysail). He and his wife have
owned her for four years.

Sydney Herreshoff Get
Together
During the first week
end in July each year a get together of
many different Herreshoff yachts is held
at Akuna Bay in the national park off
Broken bay Sydney situated on the East
coast of West Island (Australia). The
venue is a marina complex with a club
house for dinner on the Saturday night.
The objective is to
avoid any formal business and simply to
drink a little & have fun. The idea
is to use what is usually a cold and
uninteresting week end and turn it into
a piece of history participated in by
some very special people from all walks
of life.
The builder and
Skipper of the H28 Skyline Gipsy
would like to
invite any interested Herreshoff
enthusiasts to visit during the week end
with or without their craft. If any one
is interested in participating, with or
without boat, they would like to hear
from you.

Theo Aschman, an H-28
owner in Rhode Island, is the contact
for a fledgling North American H28 Class
Association ("NAH28CA").
"We have a few contacts in the US
and Nova Scotia, and we had rendezvous
or two in 1993. We hope to get a
newsletter started up soon."
There were two popular
versions of the H-28 sold in North
America during the 60's and 70's (made
in Taiwan?) called the Bermuda 30 and
the Far East 29. They have 8" or so
higher freeboard, which really changed
the appearance of the transom, and a
doghouse cabin to give 6' of headroom.
They have small bowsprits, masthead
genoas, and beautiful oriental carving
on the hanging knees in the cabin. All
are ketches.
The attached photo of Lark,
which is completely original design
except that her bunks are built-in
instead of pipe berths and she has a
bridge deck. (Also, she has a marine
head and an Atomic Four electric-start
motor instead of a Cedar Bucket and hand
crank magneto-ignition motor.) There was
one H-28, Nav-Sho, at the 1993
rendezvous which was exactly original,
including cedar bucket.
